Energy
Having electrical appliances, such as air-conditioners and refrigerators, bearing the "Energy Label" can help to save electricity. Detailed information on energy efficiency of various models of air-conditioners and refrigerators can be found on Singapore's Energy Labelling Scheme homepage app.nea.gov.sg/cms/htdocs/article.asp?pid=2844
- Choose energy-saving lamps that convert more consumed energy into usable light and emit less heat. Avoid incandescent lamps that may convert only 10% of its power into usable light. Halogen lights consume relatively more energy. Use task specific lighting, such as a reading light rather than turning on all the ceiling and wall lights.
-
Open your curtains and blinds to allow daylight in to reduce the need for artificial lighting. Make sure you turn all lights off when you leave the room. Have ceilings and walls painted a light colour to help diffuse daylight into the home
- Open your windows, let the fresh air in, and avoid placing barriers (large furniture items) to air paths. The use of natural ventilation will reduce the need for air conditioning, use a ceiling fan or side fan to increase air movement and thus thermal comfort. Note when using air conditioning keep external openings closed in that space to retain the coolth.
- Replace single glazed windows with Low E double glazed units, or apply an external Infra-red reflecting film to the external face of the existing single glazed unit to reduce solar heat gains.
- Energy savvy operations, such as using the cold wash setting on the washing machine, turning electronic appliances, such as TV’s and computers off rather than leaving them in sleep or standby modes, and regularly maintaining high energy consuming devices such as air conditioning units.
Water
- Having water fittings, such as flushing cisterns, showers and taps, bearing the "Water Efficiency Label" can help to cut costs and save water. Detailed information on water-efficient labelled fittings can be found on Public Utilities Board website http://www.pub.gov.sg/wels
- Use of grey water (used water that is collected from various sources other than the tap) for irrigation and watering of plants. Rainwater can also be collected for this purpose
Indoor Environmental Quality
- When painting or renovating a home, it is important to use low-VOC (volatile organic compound) and low-toxic interior paints and finishes to reduce toxins ordinarily associated with other paints. Using these types of paints improves the overall indoor air quality of the home.
Use of Singapore Green Label Scheme (SGLS) products within the home, reducing environmental impact and improving indoor health.
